Frequently Asked Questions

What do the tutorial videos involve?

When you sign up to our monthly subscription plan you will be invited to follow our Instagram page ‘urbanballroomcommunity’ where you will be able to access our daily online video content, receive exciting news and have access to some additional surprises. The tutorial videos are released Monday to Saturday and are each around 30 to 45 minutes long. Each week the tutorial videos are designed to cover the rhythms, steps and movements required for the chosen choreographed dance routine on Sunday.

What do the online classes involve?

The online classes are 45 minutes long and can be accessed through a zoom link or by joining ‘urbanballroomcommunity’ Instagram live. During the classes Neil will be teaching a short, choreographed dance routine and where possible will try to provide simpler and more challenging movement options so you can try both and work out which is best for you. As the classes are online so there is no need to travel anywhere just find a space in your house where you can move around freely.

What technology do you need to join the online classes?

We teach our classes using the video-conferencing application – Zoom, so you can see us, and we can see you. When you book a monthly subscription, you will be sent a link to access the zoom application which can be used on a laptop or mobile device. Zoom is free to use, and you do not need an account to join a class. When using zoom we kindly ask all our students to use the mute facility. Neil will provide opportunities for questions during the class. This way everyone can hear the teacher and the music clearly.

What do I need to wear?

Whether you are following a tutorial video or joining an online class, wear something which you feel comfortable and can move in. Most people wear a t-shirt and leggings/tracksuit bottoms. When it comes to footwear, wear something which feels comfortable and is safe for you to move about in. Some of our students wear dance shoes or trainers and some are happy to dance in their socks, as this works well on carpet. Feel free to try different options until you find something which works for you.

What if I have never had dance lessons before?

Everybody is welcome to join the UrbanBallroom community and Neil is there to support you and ensure you are given the opportunity to try a variety of dance styles. You will be provided with lots of hints and tips for you to explore and enjoy the tutorials and classes at your own pace. We welcome questions, either through email,, through Instagram or there are opportunities to ask them in class.

How long does it take to learn to dance?

Everybody is different and learns at a pace and style which is unique to them. If you manage to pick up the routine then that’s great, if you manage to pick up two steps then that’s two steps more than you had yesterday and that’s also great. The important thing is that you have as much fun learning as we have in teaching you. We encourage you to practice and provide a recording of the online class for you to access in your own time.

Do I need a partner?

All of the dance styles we teach on the urbanballroom community page are designed and choreographed for individuals to dance without needing a partner.
